About The Owners
Shortly after Sylvia met Mitch, they discovered their mutual love for cooking. Not only did they share a passion for preparing gourmet food from quality ingredients, they also placed healthy foods at the top of their list. That meant using only authentic First, Cold-Pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oils for all of their cooking needs.
Sylvia was born in Italy and raised by her European parents in Canada so, naturally, she was exposed to the traditional cuisine and methods of cooking used in the old country. Her family is from the Friuli region of northern Italy, near the original Venice, which means she also knows all about the great wines from this area and loves to teach our customers about them.
Mitch was a Chef in Columbus, Ohio over forty years ago. His first real exposure to the preparation of fine foods came in the early 80's when he worked in the 'Gourmet Room' of the Fisherman's Wharf on 161. The owner was from Rhodes, Greece and used only authentic Extra Virgin Olive Oil in all of the dishes on the menu. Since that time, Mitch has understood the importance of this most healthy of cooking oils and because of this early training, uses it exclusively.
What transpired after their meeting was a combined interest in healthy cooking and a desire to share knowledge with anyone wanting to learn the truth about an industry few actually think about. So, what could have been more perfect than for these two 'foodies' to open an Extra Virgin Olive Oil store?
To kick-off their venture, they chose to help re-create the 'new' Venice Farmer's Market in 2007 as one of the original four vendors. Then, in 2008, a commercial space opened in the Venice Centre Mall (adjacent to the market) and they went for it! Since the doors of The Olive Grove of Venice Florida opened, this energetic duo has focused on educating their customers about why it is so important to understand the source of the Olive Oils they buy.
In the beginning, there were many oils, from many countries but, because suppliers would not or could not verify the authenticity of their products, Sylvia and Mitch made a very critical decision ... sell only one oil, an oil that could be proven to be authentic, an oil that was verified and certified, with no doubt ... and where was it from? Why, California, of course.
The rest is history. For over fifteen years, The Olive Grove has provided only the absolute freshest, authentic EVOO from major producers in the Golden State. First was California Olive Ranch, a product of unsurpassed quality. Then, when COR increased their pricing, changed their formulation and began selling through major restaurant food suppliers, the couple re-sourced and branded their own EVOO, Olive Era, still from California, of even higher quality and always fresh.
In addition, an authentic Balsamic Vinegar, made in Modena, Italy, was added to the inventory in 2009. This same vinegar is still available today in both original (aged) and white varieties.
Finally, and as a result of repeated requests from Olive Oil customers, Fine Wines and Craft Beers were added to the repertoire.
The result of the synergy created between these two entrepreneurs and the wonderful products they have found is the Specialty Gourmet Food Store you can visit today.
